Tullow Oil's Likonde-1 well offshore southern Tanzania encountered evidence of residual oil and gas in two sandstone intervals with a combined thickness of over 250m, Tullow announced Thursday, 1 April.
The well was drilled to a total depth of 3647m. High gas influx forced the company to terminate drilling in the deepest objectives, Tullow said.
The company will plug and abandon the well, the first of two wells to be drilled in the Ruvuma Basin area. Tullow called the results 'encouraging' and pledged to follow up with the detailed technical work needed to determine the location for the second well.
Tullow holds 50% operating interest in Tanzania's Lindi and Mtwara blocks with partner Aminex. Solo Oil is farming into 12.5% of Aminex's 50% interest with the option to become a full venture partner in the Ruvumu license.
Tullow exploration director Angus McCoss called Likonde-1 'an encouraging well with follow-up exploration potential. The valuable technical insights gained are now being incorporated into our regional geological model to further evaluate this promising basin in Southern Tanzania.'
